Supporting schools, staff, and families to better understand behaviour, emotional regulation, and neurodevelopmental differences in children and young people.

Schools & Education

Schools increasingly support pupils experiencing emotional, behavioural, and neurodevelopmental challenges. Alongside academic learning, staff are often navigating complex needs relating to attention, emotional regulation, anxiety, and behavioural patterns.

The McGilligan Practice offers consultation, training, and parent support designed to help schools develop a deeper understanding of these challenges and respond with thoughtful, practical strategies.

Our work focuses on supporting staff and families in understanding behaviour within the wider context of development, relationships, and the demands placed on children both inside and outside the classroom.

Staff Training

Training sessions can support teaching and pastoral staff in developing a clearer understanding of behaviour, emotional regulation, and neurodevelopmental differences in pupils.

Sessions are designed to be practical, reflective, and grounded in the realities of the classroom environment.

Common training topics include:

  • Understanding ADHD and attention differences in the classroom

  • Behaviour as communication

  • Supporting emotional regulation in pupils

  • Executive functioning and organisation difficulties

  • Supporting neurodivergent pupils in mainstream settings

Training can be delivered as staff development sessions, twilight CPD, or small group workshops.

Parent Consultation Clinics

Schools may invite us to run parent consultation clinics, offering structured discussions with parents seeking guidance around behavioural, emotional, or neurodevelopmental concerns.

These sessions provide parents with space to explore patterns they are noticing at home or school, and to develop practical strategies to support their child.

Consultations may focus on:

  • attention and concentration difficulties

  • emotional regulation challenges

  • behavioural patterns and responses

  • supporting children experiencing anxiety or overwhelm.

Behaviour & SEND Consultation

Schools occasionally benefit from an external perspective when supporting pupils with complex behavioural or emotional needs.

Consultation sessions can support SENDCOs, pastoral teams, or school leadership in exploring behavioural patterns and identifying practical strategies that may support both pupils and staff.

This may include discussion around:

  • behavioural formulation

  • emotional regulation strategies

  • supporting neurodivergent pupils

  • understanding behavioural patterns within the school environment.

Parent Talks & Workshops

Educational talks for parents can provide helpful insight into children’s behaviour, development, and emotional needs.

Topics may include:

  • Understanding ADHD traits in children

  • Emotional regulation and behaviour

  • Supporting children experiencing anxiety

  • Parenting neurodivergent children.

These sessions aim to support parents in developing greater understanding and confidence in responding to their child’s needs.

Family Playing Together

Working with the McGilligan Practice

The McGilligan Practice brings together experience in psychotherapy, behavioural understanding, and public health. Our work aims to provide thoughtful guidance and practical insight to schools, staff, and families navigating complex emotional and behavioural challenges.

Schools interested in discussing training, consultation clinics, or workshops are welcome to get in touch to explore how we may be able to support their setting.
