Understanding Neurodevelopment & Neurodivergence

Neurodivergent experiences such as ADHD can influence emotional regulation, attention, relationships, self-esteem, motivation, overwhelm, and day-to-day functioning in complex and deeply individual ways.

For many people, difficulties may have been misunderstood, masked, minimised, or only recognised later in life. Others may feel exhausted by the ongoing pressure of trying to manage responsibilities, emotions, relationships, and expectations whilst internally struggling to maintain balance.

At The McGilligan Practice, support is approached thoughtfully and individually, recognising that neurodevelopmental experiences are not simply behavioural difficulties to “fix”, but experiences that often require understanding, reflection, emotional support, and practical adaptation.

How Support May Help

Support may provide space to:

  • better understand neurodivergent experiences and patterns

  • explore emotional regulation and overwhelm

  • improve self-understanding and self-compassion

  • develop supportive routines and sustainable coping strategies

  • understand relational or family impacts

  • reduce shame, masking, and internal pressure

  • improve confidence, stability, and day-to-day functioning

Our Approach

Support is grounded in psychotherapy, behavioural understanding, and emotionally informed therapeutic work.

We recognise that neurodivergent experiences are deeply individual and are often shaped not only by attention or executive functioning difficulties, but also by emotional experiences, relationships, self-concept, burnout, overwhelm, masking, and the pressure of navigating environments that may not always feel supportive or understood.

Our work is thoughtful, collaborative, and tailored to the individual, creating space for greater understanding, emotional regulation, self-awareness, and more sustainable ways of functioning.

Important Information

The McGilligan Practice does not provide medical diagnosis or psychiatric treatment.

Support is therapeutic and psychologically informed, offering space to better understand neurodivergent experiences, emotional wellbeing, relationships, and patterns of functioning within a safe and professionally grounded environment.
